Dr. Asia Shvarzman

Head Research and Innovation, Gardon Construction Ltd.

Dr. Asia Shvarzman is a leader and inventor in the fields of construction materials and decarbonization. She is the Head of the Research and Innovation Division at Gardon Construction Ltd. and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Shvarzman holds an M.Sc. in Geotechnical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Building Materials Science from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. 

Specializing in the development of innovative low-carbon construction materials, her work includes creating low-carbon high-performance cement and concrete, low-carbon high-performance ink materials, self-healing construction materials, and high-performance gypsum-based products. Her research focuses include alternative cementitious materials, 3D concrete printing, infrastructure durability, and waste-repurposing methods that promote a circular economy. By merging materials science with civil engineering, Dr. Shvarzman addresses climate change through customized cement and concrete solutions, advanced ground improvement technologies, and sustainable resource management strategies. 

With over 25 years of experience, she has consulted for both the private and public sectors in Canada and Israel, contributing to significant infrastructure projects, including bridges and chemical plants. Dr. Shvarzman has led more than 15 research projects funded by federal and provincial government agencies over the past decade, facilitating the market adoption of new low-carbon technologies developed in collaboration with academic and industrial partners. Notably, she served as chair of the ASTM Task Group on Alkali-Activated Materials. 

Before her current role, Dr. Shvarzman was the Head of Research and Innovation at Antex Western/ACM Technologies. Her extensive background and innovative perspective make her a prominent leader in advancing sustainability within the construction industry.
