H.E. Mr. Shawn Steil
His Excellency Shawn Steil has served as Ambassador of Canada to Vietnam since May 2022, a period of two and a half years that has seen a robust growth in bilateral relations marked by enhanced Canadian engagement through its Indo-Pacific Strategy.
Ambassador Steil has devoted his career to promoting Canadian partnerships across Asia. In China, after conducting award-winning research on China’s Three Gorges Dam, he completed postings as Political Officer in Beijing (with accreditation to Mongolia) and as Head of the Canadian Consulate in Chongqjng. His experience in China led to two assignments at Global Affairs Headquarters, as Deputy Director for Commercial Relations and later as Executive Director for Greater China.
He has also served as Consul General in Istanbul and Senior Trade Commissioner for Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkmenistan, and as Ambassador to Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan.
He is proud to serve in leadership positions promoting gender equality in his current role, including as Co-Chair of the National Plastics Action Partnership in Vietnam.
