OTTAWA, Canada– December 22, 2017 – The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) and the Economics and Technology Research Institute of China National Petroleum Corporation (ETRI of CNPC) initiated a non-governmental, non-official (Track II) Energy Dialogue from Dec. 4 to 6, 2017 in Beijing, China.
Canadian and Chinese experts met to discuss opportunities and challenges within the Canada-China energy relationship, and to develop a set of recommendations that would support enhanced bilateral energy trade and investment. The Dialogue covers a full spectrum of energy subsectors including: renewables, energy efficiency, Indigenous inclusion, nuclear safety, and natural gas and oil. The initiative was highlighted in the Canada-China Joint Statement on Climate Change and Clean Growth issued on December 4, 2017 in Beijing.
The ongoing Track II Energy Dialogue follows up on a commitment made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in September 2016 to develop and reinforce bilateral co-operation in the field of energy. APF Canada and ETRI of CNPC are acting as the Secretariats for Canada and China, respectively. APF Canada President and CEO Stewart Beck is the Canada Co-Chair.
“The Dialogue will provide a platform for us to informally explore with our Chinese counterparts how we can work together to enhance trade in energy commodities, technologies and services. We hope to arrive at a series of recommendations that will be of value to both governments as they pursue opportunities for collaboration. We look forward to a fruitful discussion,” said Stewart Beck, President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and Dialogue Co-Chair.
Canadian Track II Committee Members include: John Barrett, President and CEO, Canadian Nuclear Association; Cheryl Cardinal, President and CEO, Indigenous Center of Energy; David Keane, President and CEO, BC LNG Alliance; Martin Luymes, Director, Programs and Relations, Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) and Chair of the board, Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance; Tim McMillan, President and CEO, Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, and Elisa Obermann Executive Director, Marine Renewables Canada.
