The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to strengthening Canada's relations with Asia. We are accepting applications for a Research Scholar (RS) to support our research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technology with a regional focus on Canada-Japan/South Korea Relations.
The Research Scholar will join APF Canada's research team and work directly with a Program Manager. The successful candidate will:
- Contribute to research and programming on the Northeast Asian region (Japan and South Korea), with a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital technology, and other related topics;
- Develop their skills in policy research, writing, and analysis.
- Assist in organizing events, dialogues, and other program co-ordination tasks.
Successful applicants will have the following qualifications:
- Interest and experience in researching contemporary Northeast Asian politics and technological developments;
- M.A. (or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, International Development, Sociology, Public Policy, Economics, or a related field (exceptional candidates with a B.A. or equivalent will also be considered);
- Proficiency in either Japanese or Korean (desired);
- Excellent written communication skills;
- Strong teamwork and collaborative skills, ability to adapt, innovate, work in a fast-paced environment.
Eligibility
Selected candidates must:
- Be recent (less than two years) graduates of their degree program or nearing completion of their degree.
- Have completed their post-secondary studies at a Canadian university, or be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who completed their graduate studies either in Canada or overseas. (Priority is given to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents.) International students may be considered should they qualify, provided they hold a valid work permit for the duration of the scholarship term to establish their legal status in Canada.
Grant Amount
The Research Scholar’s grant allowance will be $44,400.00 for the 12-month duration of the term, disbursed quarterly. Research Scholars needing to relocate from outside of B.C. may be eligible for a one-time payment of an additional $1,000. (Note: The Research Scholarship opportunity is not considered regular employment; remuneration is provided through a grant.)

- Contribute to research and programming on the South Asian region, which includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, with a focus on foreign policy and security issues (traditional and non-traditional security, maritime, security, etc.), regional co-operation, and conflict in South Asia and in the Indo-Pacific region, or related areas;
- Develop their skills in policy research, writing, and analysis.
- Assist in organizing events, dialogues, and other program co-ordination tasks.

APF Canada is a not-for-profit organization focused on strengthening ties between Canada and Asia through its research, education, and convening activities, such as the APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership.
We are seeking a proactive Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) Coordinator for the APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership on contract, full-time employment. This position reports to the Senior Program Manager, APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership.
Phase Two of the APEC-Canada Growing Business Partnership is a five-year project (2022-2027) funded by the Government of Canada that aims to improve inclusive economic growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially those led by women and young women.

Major Responsibilities
Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) 50%
- Support the coordination of gender-responsive and inclusive MSME-related research and monitor relevant public policies, trends and emerging gender equality issues;
- Assists in the development of project reports, action plans, policy briefs, recommendations and communication materials that support poverty reduction, gender equality and women’s economic empowerment;
- Assist with the coordination of gender-responsive procurement and budgeting
- Assist in coordinating gender-responsive and inclusive meetings, consultations, and partnership events, including conferences, roundtables, workshops, and training sessions with leaders and experts from Canada and other APEC economies;
- Support ongoing coordination of gender-related activities through the project’s implementation and assist with monitoring and evaluation.
Project Co-ordination and Administration 50%
- Contribute to Project meeting agendas, materials, speaking points, and presentations, including convenings such as the APEC Small and Medium Enterprise Working Group and APEC Business Advisory Council
- Support the preparation and submission of reports to the project donor, including annual and semi-annual reports, work plans, financial forms and reporting, and other documents.
- Maintain an updated and organized project management information system with project tasks and milestones.
- Communicate internally with the Project Team and APF Canada’s staff, executive leadership, and Board, and externally with project stakeholders, academics, experts, and government representatives, including drafting letters, emails, and other communications materials.
- Other tasks and event logistical support on the ground may be assigned from time to time.
Successful applicants will have the following qualifications
- Graduate education in international development, public policy, business management, non-profit management, administration, or communications (or another related field of study) is highly desirable. An equivalent combination of undergraduate education and two to three years of work experience will be considered.
- Two to three years of experience with GESI and project co-ordination, management, or administrative work in international development, government, non-profit organizations, or research is essential.
- Excellent ability to manage multiple work assignments simultaneously, identify priorities, develop timelines, and use sound judgment to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communicator in English with an ability to respectfully engage with multiple stakeholder groups from government, research institutes, business associations, and civil society.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Displays tact and professionalism and can work with organizationally sensitive information, ensuring confidentiality and respect for the nature of work.
Desired Skills and Abilities
- Previous work experience in supporting a Global Affairs Canada-funded international development project is highly desirable;
- Knowledge about issues related to MSMEs and entrepreneurship, particularly in the context of fostering sustainable development and poverty reduction, and promoting gender equality;
- Basic knowledge in project management is an asset.
- Completion of the Government of Canada’s Gender Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) certificate or other gender equality, inclusion, and diversity training is an asset.
- The ability to work in French or an Asian language relevant to Phase Two is an asset.
Eligibility
Applicants should have a valid and legal authorization to work in Canada upon application. The successful applicant will ideally work out of Vancouver, BC, on a Hybrid Schedule (two days onsite/three days off-site) from APF Canada’s head office in downtown Vancouver, Monday to Friday, during regular office hours (approximately 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this role is $45,000-55,000. Salary offer will be determined commensurate with experience and level of expertise subject to APF Canada’s salary band. APF Canada’s total remuneration package for this role includes a non-contributory extended health care coverage, including dependents, above mandatory paid time-off days and a flexible and hybrid work schedule.
