As of December 9, 2020, Hong Kong has recorded 7,180 confirmed cases and 113 deaths as a result of COVID-19. Despite early successes in identifying, testing, and isolating the novel virus, the city's outbreak grew quickly during the second half of March which was driven by cases connected to international travel and local clusters. In response, the Hong Kong government banned non-residents from entering or transiting through the territory, and closed leisure and recreational venues. Recent numbers of new cases have dropped, but officials are reluctant to ease restrictions.
